Note from Ken
If you are like me, one of the first things I want to know is, who is behind an organization asking me to participate?
Having been homeless myself, I know even one more night might be one too many for the 37,085 homeless veterans living on the streets of our nation. So I created a way to get them housed quickly into PERMANENT housing. Then a couple of celebrity types asked me to replicate it in their home states, so I created an online system and they helped raise the funds to do so. Next thing I know I’m writing this thing here so you can decide whether or not to join us. So this is how we got right here, right now:
After 8 years as a stand-up comedian, headlining 2nd tier clubs nationwide, I got sober in 1990. In 1994 I founded a successful technology Executive Search firm which allowed me to become a philanthropist.
In 2012, during a blitz with the VA to find homeless veterans, I learned that there are veterans on the streets right now, with housing right in front of them, but they can’t get into this housing because they simply lack the deposit. So I created a technology solution that allows us to approve these deposits in minutes, and then send the deposit check to the landlord the same day.
Seriously, it is simply that simple.
After Dusty Hill, John Mellencamp and Mitch Albom asked me to expand to their home states and helped raise the funds, it grew.
I created this to be something I would want to donate to: Low cost – high efficiency – high impact, and completely transparent. Admin expenses are 8% and every dollar we deploy results in another veteran housed. As for transparency, every single day we post on our website the number of veterans, veteran families, and families with children housed, and where.
This accuracy of reporting allows us to pinpoint results. For example we know because of Dusty Hill’s engagement, over 1,100 Houston veterans got housed. Or we know John Mellencamp was responsible for over 300 Indiana vets getting housed, and counting.
As for credibility, we have been well documented in the local and national press.
Right now, our mission is to recruit the famous to crusade for the anonymous. By helping us illuminate the hidden struggle, you can motivate Americans to help those who served, but now live on the streets. Whether you want to help raise funds, or just help us get the word out, it will all result in another veteran or veteran family with children get housed. Every time.
At the end of 2015, I closed my business to house veterans full time because there are veteran families living in their cars and on the streets right now just waiting for that last piece: the deposit. That’s all that is stopping them, so we provide it.
It really is simply that simple.
If you feel called to help us help them directly, or just be a voice for the voiceless, that’s simple too, just join us.
